When you tune into a great radio station, you know exactly what you’re listening to within five seconds. Even before a song finishes or a host says hello, there’s a specific vibe, energy, and sound that tells you exactly what you're listening to.

That isn't an accident. It’s radio imaging.

If you want to run a successful internet radio station, you need to treat your audio just like a physical brand treats its visual logo. Here's everything you need to know about radio imaging, why it matters, and how to use it to make your station sound professional.

What is Radio Imaging?

Radio imaging (often called "sonic branding") is the collection of sound effects, music beds, jingles, and voiceovers used to identify and brand your station.

Think of it as the glue that holds your broadcast together. Instead of letting your stream drop into dead silence or awkward cuts between songs, imaging creates a smooth, professional flow. It tells your audience who you are, what your format is, and what to expect next.

Generally, radio imaging falls into two categories:

 • Stationwide Imaging: This brands your station as a whole. It runs 24/7 across all time slots and usually includes things like general station IDs and main sweepers that play between songs.
 • Show-Specific Imaging: This is custom audio tailored to a specific DJ, playlist, or time block. It includes custom show intros, outros, and promotional teasers for upcoming segments.

Tailoring Your Sound: Music vs. Talk Formats

Every station needs a different sonic identity. The approach you take depends entirely on the type of content you broadcast.

Music Stations (Pop, R&B, Rock, Country, etc.)

For music formats, flow and energy are your top priorities. Your imaging shouldn't slam the brakes on the music, it should bridge the gap between tracks. Music stations rely heavily on fast-paced sweepers, beat-matched transitions, and sung jingles that match the tempo of the playlist.

Talk, News, and Sports Stations

For talk formats, authority and pacing matter most. You aren't trying to keep a dance beat alive, you’re trying to create clean transitions between topics, interviews, and commercial breaks. Talk stations lean on dramatic sound effects, background music beds that play while the host speaks, and authoritative voiceovers that build anticipation for the next segment.

The Radio Imaging Glossary

If you’re new to broadcasting, the industry jargon can get confusing. Here's a quick breakdown of the core audio elements you can mix into your station's rotation:

 • Jingles: Short, catchy musical pieces that feature your station’s name, slogan, or catchphrase, usually sung by professional vocalists.
 • Acapellas: A jingle sung entirely without background instruments or beats.
 • Sweepers (Liners or IDs): Quick spoken announcements – usually under 20 seconds – that play over the intro of an upcoming song or right between tracks. (Example: “You’re listening to the best classic rock on [Station Name].”)
 • Music Beds: Instrumental tracks played at a lower volume in the background while a host is speaking or reading a script.
 • Stingers / Bumpers: Short audio clips used to transition into or out of a commercial break, often teasing what songs or topics are coming up next.
 • Promos: Short, highly produced audio clips that market an upcoming show or special event on your station, detailing the day and time it airs.
 • Drop-ins: Short, recognizable sound bites from pop culture, movies, or viral videos used to add humor or personality to a show.
 • Drones: Long, sustained sound effects used to build suspense and dramatic tension right before a big announcement or news segment.
 • Intros & Outros: The dedicated bookends of a show that clearly mark its beginning and end, helping listeners navigate your programming schedule.
 • Listener Voices: Recorded clips of your actual listeners saying how much they love your station.
 • Voiceover (VO): The actual recorded vocal performance from a voice actor that is mixed into your sweepers and promos.

Where to Get Radio Imaging for Your Station

You don't need a massive commercial studio budget to get high-quality audio branding. Depending on your goals and your budget, you have a few great options:

1. The DIY Route

If you’re running a passion project or an indie stream, you can produce your own imaging. Using basic audio editing software, you can record your own voice (or a friend's) and mix it with royalty-free sound effects and music beds.

2. Freelance Voice Actors

If you want a specific style – like a deep, cinematic voice or a high-energy hype man – you can hire professional voice talent on freelance marketplaces to read your station scripts. From there, you can drop the raw vocals right into your station's automation system.

3. Premium Imaging Libraries & Automated Tools

If you want your internet radio station to compete directly with major terrestrial stations, you need professional-grade production. However, cutting, mixing, and editing audio tracks from scratch can easily eat up your time.

Through an exclusive partnership, Live365 broadcasters get a special deal on Benztown’s imaging libraries and tools. This gives you direct access to the same massive audio packages, sweepers, and effects used by top-tier radio stations worldwide. Plus, you gain access to automation tools that let you customize imaging in 10 seconds flat.

Bring Your Station to Life

Radio imaging is what separates a basic music playlist from a fully realized radio station. It builds listener loyalty, keeps your stream organized, and gives your brand a memorable identity.

<![CDATA[Dinosaur Jr. Share Details of New Album and Fall Tour Dates]]>https://live365.com/blog/dinosaur-jr-share-details-of-new-album-and-fall-tour-dates/6a441ae68ca8f76381175f1aTue, 30 Jun 2026 20:21:22 GMT

Dinosaur Jr. have announced their first LP in five years. It's called There Near, and will be the follow-up to 2021’s Sweep Into Space. The LP is set for release on August 28, a month before the boys kick off the second half of their 2026 tour with Detroit indie rocker Stef Chura.

“I'm not always sure what a song is 'about' when I'm writing it,” guitarist J Mascis said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I guess the meaning will present itself at some point. I'll use whatever words work. And a lot of it will be influenced by whatever esoteric mumbo jumbo I'm reading at the time. I try not to think too hard about any of it. I think it's a drag that Spotify shows all the lyrics to a song. What's the fun of that?”

To tease There Near, Mascis, Murph, and Lou Barlow have dropped a lead single. Titled "Several Got Away," the track is an alt-rock romp with blazing guitar riffs. Echoing what Mascis said to the press - the official lyrics to the track are unreleased.

The band has also dropped a music video to accompany the new single. The visual starts off with Mascis, Murph, and Barlow posing for a drab photoshoot. Suddenly, a pair of fiery hands starts wreaking havoc from the skies. The boys run away, while also rocking their instruments in angel costumes.

In other Dinosaur Jr. news: J Mascis and Mike Watt recently swapped cover songs, and back in 2025, the band teamed up with indie darling Snail Mail for a short summer tour.

Phoebe Bridgers is back in the public eye. Last week (June 25), the trailblazing alternative artist shared that Lost Weekend, her first solo album in six years, will be released August 14. Bridgers has also unveiled “Lost Boys,” its lead single and her first solo song in four years.

In the Lance Oppenheim and Pablo Rochat-directed music video for the new track, Bridgers plays an elf surrounded by knights in a Renaissance-style video game come to life. The Runescape-esque visual also features Superman actor Skyler Gisondo as a gas station attendant who joins Bridgers' club.

Bridgers is joined by a ton of special guests on “Lost Boys,” including her boygenius bandmates Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, Caroline Shaw on vocals, Alex G on drums and voice memo, Jack Antonoff on electric guitar, synths, drums, and vocoder, Bright Eyes’ Nate Walcott on trumpets, Blake Mills on synths, Chris Thile on mandolin, and Christian Lee Hutson on acoustic guitar. According to Pitchfork, The song was produced by Bridgers, Tony Berg, Ethan Gruska, and Antonoff, and features additional production by Alex G.

The announcement of Lost Weekend comes soon after Bridgers made headlines for her surprise show at Madison Square Garden on June 4. The phoneless, acoustic-style set featured seven new songs, tickets ranging from $1 to $20, and proceeds benefiting the Community Justice Exchange’s Immigration Bond Freedom Fund. Bridgers will be engaging on a world tour soon after Lost Weekend is released. Titled "The Lost Tour," the trek will run from September to December and will enforce the MSG show's strict phone-free policy with the help of Yondr pouches.

Bridgers' last album, Punisher, was released back in the summer of 2020. After that, she teamed up with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker for the return of boygenius. Shortly before that band’s 2023 comeback, Bridgers released her last solo single: a charity cover of the Handsome Family’s Christmas song “So Much Wine.”

In other Phoebe Bridgers news - the artist is set to appear in Primetime, a new A24 film starring Robert Pattinson that chronicles Chris Hansen’s infamous 2000s TV program To Catch a Predator.

No Production Experience? No Problem: How Benztown’s New Tools Level the Playing Field for Independent Broadcasters

🗓️ Live Masterclass: Want to see these new tools in action? Join us and the Benztown team on July 16 at 12pm ET / 9am PT for a live walkthrough and Q&A dedicated to Live365 broadcasters.

Save your spot here!

As an independent broadcaster, you wear a lot of hats. On any given day, you’re the program director, music scheduler, social media manager, and on-air talent.

But there’s one hat that can easily cause a bottleneck in your daily routine: audio producer.

We all want our stations to sound like major-market FM giants, but creating custom station imaging – the sweepers, promos, and branding that give your station its unique identity – usually requires a bit of a learning curve. You need great voice talent, editing software, and the time to meticulously mix vocal tracks with sound effects so they don't sound muddy or amateur.

Our partner Benztown wanted to solve this exact problem for independent stations. Instead of forcing broadcasters to become expert audio editors, they built two new tools – AirReady and Instant Imaging – directly into the Benztown platform. They use smart automation to handle the heavy audio lifting for you.

Here’s a look at how these tools work once you log into your Benztown account, and how they can change your daily workflow.

AirReady: Pro Studio Mixing in 10 Seconds

If you already have your own voiceover files (or prefer to record your own voice), AirReady is your new best friend. It acts like an automated studio engineer right inside the Benztown platform, giving you a simple, automated way to swap your station voiceovers into any Benztown library element in an instant.

 • How It Works: Once you're logged into Benztown, you upload your dry voiceover files into organized folders on their platform (or record them live right in your browser).
 • The Smart Mix: When you choose a sweeper, branding element, or a promo from Benztown's massive library, AirReady automatically adjusts the audio levels, blending your voice perfectly with the music and sound effects.
 • The Result: In about 10 seconds, the system renders a fully produced, broadcast-ready file. If it’s not quite perfect, you can easily go back into the Benztown interface and tweak the mix.

By cutting out the hours usually spent manually cutting, editing, and rebuilding audio tracks from scratch, this tool lets you skip straight to the creative part: putting out distinctive, on-brand audio that connects with your audience.

💡
The Best Part: AirReady is completely free for anyone with a Benztown library subscription. This includes our standard $5/month tier and is automatically built into all premium Live365 Broadcast 4/5 and Non-Copyright 4 packages! To inquire about these exclusive deals for Live365 broadcasters, email us at help@live365.com.

Instant Imaging: The One-Click AI Production Assistant

What happens if you don't have a voice actor, or your own voice doesn't fit a specific format? Hiring professional talent gets expensive quickly. That’s where Instant Imaging comes in, using high-quality synthetic voice technology to build custom audio from scratch right inside your Benztown dashboard.

 • Set It and Forget It: In your Benztown master settings, you type in your station's permanent details – like your call letters, station name, and main slogans.
 • Choose Your Voice: You select from a curated lineup of AI voices provided by Benztown.
 • Type and Render: Need a quick liner for an upcoming show? Just type your script into the Benztown VO Generator, hit "Instant Imaging," and the AI generates the voiceover and mixes it into a finished track automatically. You can even use "speech-to-speech" to record a rough guide voice for the AI to follow your specific rhythm.

This tool gives solo broadcasters total creative freedom to customize their favorite imaging elements with just a single click. It allows you to maintain a polished, highly professional sound and brand continuity across your entire broadcast schedule without a massive time commitment.

🏷️
Exclusive Live365 Pricing: Instant Imaging is normally a $49.99/month add-on, but because you're part of the Live365 community, you can add it to your Benztown account for a special rate of just $29.99/month. To inquire about these exclusive deals for Live365 broadcasters, email us at help@live365.com.

The Secret Sauce: The "Lift" is in the Setup

While these tools completely eliminate the need for editing software, they do rely on good organization within the Benztown platform to give you the best results. Because the mixing happens automatically, taking the time to set up your station details, organize your voice folders, and choose the right AI talents on their site is the most important step.

To help you get your Benztown account perfectly configured, we are hosting a live masterclass webinar exclusively for the Live365 Broadcaster Community. The team at Benztown will walk through their new tools live, show you how to organize your assets for the best audio quality, and answer your questions on the spot.

Webinar Details:

 • Date: Thursday, July 16
 • Time: 12:00 PM ET / 9:00 AM PT
 • Where: Live via Zoom

If you enjoy the robust digital audio infrastructure that SoundStack provides as the parent company of Live365 or if you’ve simply been broadcasting your own radio station with us for years – you may not know one big fact about both companies...

Every single SoundStack and Live365 team member works remotely.

That's right: in order to power your favorite broadcasting engine, SoundStack and Live365 employ software engineers, system administrators, product solutions engineers, customer support specialists, and sales and marketing teams from all across the world. And if you think about it, it makes sense...how else are we able to provide world-class service for our publishers if not by employing expert team members from all over the globe?

SoundStack has been steadily growing since its unveiling in 2022. Offsites allowing team members to meet in person have happened on a smaller scale before. But lately, SoundStack has experienced rapid expansion. It's been about 10 years since Live365 was acquired by CEO Jon Stephenson, and 4 years since we rebranded into SoundStack. The size of our team has increased from about twenty-or-so tech gurus to around 100 team members globally. When a company grows that big, it's nice to have alignment...a kind of alignment that can often only be achieved by face-to-face encounters.

So in 2026, the minds behind SoundStack proposed a bold plan: a three-day offsite where every single SoundStack team member was invited and could finally meet each other...all happening in the Eastern European country where SoundStack's story technically began.

In mid-May, the SoundStack team packed their bags and traveled to the Alpin Resort Hotel – located in the mountainous area of Brașov, Romania. The event, named AMPLIFY, officially kicked off on May 13 and started with a greeting from Jon Stephenson. He shared childhood tales about his own connection to radio, showed off the history of SoundStack, and explained how Romania actually factored into that history; Stephenson was in Romania at a Bucharest McDonald’s when he won the bankruptcy auction for Live365 back in 2016.

Inside AMPLIFY: SoundStack's Largest Team Gathering Yet
SoundStack CEO Jon Stephenson greets team members on the first day of AMPLIFY.

After that, Senior Vice President of Operations Justin Ruoff took the "biggest selfie in SoundStack history" and led the large group in a fun icebreaker. Ruoff created a bingo-like 'connection sprint' where team members were tasked with quickly meeting each other, while also trying to figure out who in the room had completed specific career milestones. Some examples of the milestones in the bingo squares included "has represented SoundStack at an industry event or conference," and "has been at SoundStack long enough to remember when the team was under 20 people." Upon meeting someone who had completed the milestone, the player had to acquire that person's signature on their bingo sheet, and take a selfie with them.

Team members hurried to chat with co-workers, scribble signatures, take selfies, complete a row of boxes, and be among the first to turn in their bingo sheet in the hopes of winning a prize. Other eager Stackers – like VP of Publisher Enablement Heather Smith – simply relished in the opportunity to learn more about fellow employees. "I want to fill out ALL the boxes," she said during the game.

AMPLIFY offered the chance for SoundStack team members to present ideas, skills, and advice to others during midday panels and group sessions. There were featured speeches that covered a variety of topics: including finance, marketplace dynamics, business clarity, and redesigned product experiences. There were even re-enactments of SoundStack and Live365 customer experiences, as we continue to refine the customer onboarding process.

Mitch Kocen, Morgan Wiedmann, Nicole McClellan, and Michael Fischer participate in the "Day In the Life of Our Customers" re-enactment.

Besides the featured talks, there were several smaller presentations Stackers could attend. These more intimate panels touched on niche skills and softwares the team use in a typical workday, from things like metadata and Liquidsoap all the way to AI.

Of course, AMPLIFY wasn't just all business. Stackers had time to bond over fun activities that happened across the Romanian countryside. There was a scenic hike through the Poiana Brașov mountains, a guided ATV off-roading adventure, and a trip to the stunning Bran Castle – also known as "Dracula's Castle."

Additionally, the Alpin Resort Hotel itself provided plenty of entertainment for team members. Stackers worked together to complete various themed escape rooms. During breaks, employees could walk through "Magic Land": an enchanted nature escape that featured colorful sculptures, huts, and fairy tale characters. On the final eve of AMPLIFY, Stackers celebrated with a relaxing outdoor bonfire and dinner experience. (We'd be remiss without briefly mentioning the hearty Transylvanian fruit spirit – known as pálinka – team members dared each other to try!)

During AMPLIFY, the company also reflected upon the life and legacy of the late Ionut Sarghi. Sarghi worked as a Support Expert and was part of the SoundStack team since 2019. Sarghi was born and raised in Romania, and sadly passed away before AMPLIFY in early 2026.

To commemorate Sarghi's contributions to SoundStack, the team created the Support Excellence Award in his honor. The first-ever prize went to Shawn Minisall. Other awards included The Empathy Award, which was given to Release Manager Victoria Ionescu, and The Hustle Award, which went to Team Lead Vlad Munteanu.

After three successful and activity-filled days in Brașov, the majority of Stackers departed to Bucharest, where they had one last hoorah singing karaoke at the city's famous Mojo Music Club. Then it was time for goodbyes and some early morning flights back home. It's been about a month since the events of AMPLIFY, and we're still reeling over how insightful, memorable, and fulfilling the experience was!

Why AMPLIFY Matters

If you're a SoundStack partner or a broadcaster with Live365, you may be wondering why we're sharing all these details with you. What kind of impact will AMPLIFY have on your future audio experience?

For starters, AMPLIFY was the place to discuss what's next for the platform. There were product demos we unveiled during our sessions and countless discussions that we're excited to share with you in the coming months.

Another reason AMPLIFY was important? It allowed for rapid team alignment and growth. Being together in one space made us all collectively aware of the positives – as well as the challenges – our publishers encounter on a day-to-day basis. AMPLIFY featured numerous stories and survey results from real broadcasters and partners. Your input helped us understand what we need to work on next, and how you would like us to improve our products so you can better reach your audio goals.

SoundStack feels stronger now more than ever, and we're ready to put in the effort to achieve the features and fixes you've asked for!

We're hoping to have more in-person company events like AMPLIFY in the near future. But our largest team gathering yet could not have happened without the help of YOU, our wonderful publishers. Without your dedication to the platform and its tools, we would not have such a hard-working, talented, and diverse team of people to call our own.

And so we conclude this behind-the-scenes recap of AMPLIFY with two words: THANK YOU!

Or, as they say in Romania: mulţumesc!

<![CDATA[Viral Pop Artist Oliver Tree Killed in Helicopter Accident]]>https://live365.com/blog/viral-pop-artist-oliver-tree-killed-in-helicopter-accident/6a305618270e34f6bcf74548Mon, 15 Jun 2026 20:44:06 GMT

Oliver Tree, the musician and comedian behind viral pop hits “Alien Boy” and “Life Goes On,” has died. The Associated Press reported over the weekend (June 14) that Tree was onboard one of two helicopters that collided mid-air in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He had been in Brazil to play shows as part of his "World's First World Tour". He was 32 years old.

One of the helicopters crashed into several electronic vehicles in a car dealership’s parking lot, igniting a fire that was later extinguished, according to local police and fire departments. All six people aboard the chopper were killed, including DJ and producer Lucas Brito Chaves, the YouTuber known as Gaspi (a 23-year-old who had more than 2.8 million followers), and independent director and screenwriter Lucas Vignale.

Check out our selection of free stations streaming Oliver Tree music at Live365.com.

Born Oliver Tree Nickell on June 29, 1993, in Santa Cruz, California, the pop artist spent his early career producing dubstep and performing live in the San Francisco Bay Area. He started releasing music under the name "Tree" in 2010. Three years after putting out his first-ever EP, Demons, he went viral with the single “When I’m Down” — earning him a record deal with Atlantic. His official debut as Oliver Tree arrived in 2017 with “Welcome to LA,” alongside his soon-to-be signature look: an infamous bowl cut paired with a gaudy sweatsuit and bold, red sunglasses.

As he rolled out his major label debuts, the 2018 EP Alien Boy and the 2020 album Ugly Is Beautiful, Tree embraced increasingly wacky visuals that courted memes, often at his own expense. He went on to release three other studio albums: 2022’s Cowboy Tears, 2023’s Alone in a Crowd, and Love You Madly Hate You Badly from this past April.

With each release, he found success on the Billboard charts and social media platforms, be it through collaborations with Diplo and David Guetta, or his own singles “Cowboys Don’t Cry” and “Superhero.” Even outside of his music career, Tree remained an ambitious and creative individual, from bathing in a tub full of hot Cheetos for a laugh or setting the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest kick scooter in 2020.

“My goal is to just show people how to be themselves, how to embrace their imperfections and lean into it and be the best version of ourselves,” he told NPR back in 2023. “It's been three years of being sober and learning how to love yourself. You know, that’s the thing: we have so much anger in this world, and a lot of times people are just very unhappy with themselves, and then they take that out on others. So, so much of my goal is to be able to learn how to love myself and try to show people how to love themselves.”

As the news of his tragic death spread, a wide array of fellow musicians took to social media to pay tribute to the late artist, including DiploFlying LotusKid CudiBebe RexhaLil Yachty, and Andy Milonakis, among others. “It’s really hard to understand how someone who you once shared such a specific and formative time of your life with can all of a sudden be gone,” wrote Melanie Martinez, who previously dated Tree. “He was so dedicated to his art which I admired and respected so deeply. I think everyone who knew him will look back at those moments of laughter and joy he so easily sparked.”

After unveiling her latest music video for the emotional ballad "the cure" just last week (May 22), Olivia Rodrigo has been spotted shooting her next big visual. And this time, it looks like there will be more dancing involved.

On Tuesday (May 26), Rodrigo was discovered traversing the crosswalks of Manhattan, a posse of ballerinas behind her. In photos posted to Reddit, the dancers wear traditional pink tutus and slippers while Rodrigo rocks a dark blue hoodie and black mid-calf boots.

Whatever Olivia is filming, it's definitely related to her upcoming third studio album: you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. The record is officially scheduled to be released on June 12, and so far three singles - "drop dead," "the cure," and "begged" - have been shared with the public.

According to Rolling Stone Australia and an Instagram post shared by Rodrigo, the album will be split into two sides - like a traditional vinyl record or cassette - possibly reflecting the moods of the music. The first, “Girl So in Love,” contains seven songs, while the flip side, “You Seem Pretty Sad,” bears six. Whether or not there’s any deeper conceptual meaning behind the subtitling of the sides will be revealed when the record comes out in June.

In other Olivia Rodrigo news, the pop princess has announced a 65+ date global arena run in support of you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love. The trek kicks off September 25 in Hartford, CT and will conclude May 2, 2027, in Spain. Wolf Alice, Devon Again, The Last Dinner Party, Grace Ives, and Die Spitz will support. You can learn more information about the tour here.

<![CDATA[From Indie to Industry Nominee: How Arthur "Bsmooth" Smith Built an Award-Winning Global Station]]>https://live365.com/blog/from-indie-to-industry-nominee-how-arthur-bsmooth-smith-built-an-award-winning-global-station/6a10782635ab51cce54634f6Wed, 27 May 2026 15:52:40 GMT
From Indie to Industry Nominee: How Arthur "Bsmooth" Smith Built an Award-Winning Global Station

Industry voting for the the Media Guild Awards – including Best Independent Radio DJ, which Arthur Smith is nominated for – is open through Friday, May 29, 2026.

Vote now!

At Live365, our platform runs on the passion of independent broadcasters who live and breathe radio history. Arthur "Bsmooth" Smith is exactly that kind of broadcaster.

As the GM of Radio Soul 100 FM – awarded Best Internet Station 2025 (RC) – and President of the National Black Radio Hall of Fame (Las Vegas Chapter), Arthur has spent 16 years programming with a distinct purpose: "Soul, Funk & Jazz for the Generations."

Now, Arthur is up for Best Independent Radio DJ at the Media Guild Awards. Because this is an industry-voted ballot, he’s reaching out to the wider broadcasting community to help secure a win for independent internet radio.

🗳️ How to Vote (Industry Ballot)

This award is decided by peers in the field. If you're a broadcaster, audio engineer, DJ, radio station owner, air personality, podcaster, recording artist, or producer, your vote counts. Voting ends May 29, 2026.

"This nomination is a testament to the technical infrastructure and global reach we’ve built through the Digital Wing™ and Radio Soul 100 FM," Arthur says. "Seeing our signal recognized alongside some of the best in the world reinforces the 'Iron' we are bringing to the independent broadcast sector… Let's keep the signal independent."

📻 From LA Production Carts to the Las Vegas Strip

Arthur’s journey behind the microphone didn't follow a straight line. He learned the fundamentals at traditional Los Angeles stations like KPCC and KCLA during an era when the medium required hands-on technical precision.

"I won't pretend it was a linear journey," Arthur shares. "My time at PCC introduced me to radio production, we still used carts back then. I learned mic control and timing. The music has always been in me and a part of my entire existence."

While hosting Classic American Music, Arthur spun legendary artists like Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Ella Fitzgerald, and Duke Ellington. It became a personal education in jazz history, but it also opened his eyes to the systemic challenges those legacy artists faced.

"I began reading about their experiences in the industry that liked their talent but not their citizenship. That shaped my respect for Black radio stations who made them and other artists famous."

After taking a break from the airwaves, Arthur trusted his instincts and relaunched at KCLA FM in Los Angeles in 2009. "I didn't want to talk about what I did back in the day. I trusted that I could come back, and receiving recognition now solidifies my choice to not give up."

🎵 Finding the "Fusion Pocket" of Sound

Programming a station that appeals to both older jazz purists and younger listeners requires a specific ear for curation. For Arthur, the philosophy comes down to a classic track by The O'Jays: "I love music, any kinda music, just as long as it's groovy."

"Born on the East Coast and raised on the West Coast gave me an appreciation and insight into many musical styles," Arthur explains. He models his programming after legendary air personalities like Frankie Crocker and Lynn Briggs, who treated multiple genres with equal respect. "I believe there's a fusion pocket of sound that goes together."

📈 The Marketing Hustle: Blending Local and Global Roots

Building an audience for an independent station means treating marketing as an ongoing conversation, whether you're handing out physical business cards or building international connections. Arthur manages a large local presence in Las Vegas while pulling in a global stream of listeners.

A side-by-side view of a laminated official press credential and the physical radio station building, showing the local infrastructure behind his global broadcast footprint.

"I don't know that I actually balance that," Arthur says candidly. "I would say I continually brainstorm new ideas around both. Whenever I encounter a local business, I attempt to find a talking bridge to highlight that Radio Soul 100 FM is an asset."

He also uses his international reach to build creative programming bridges. "I have a really cool UK following, so I began a UK to the USA artist highlight showcasing UK talents wanting to shine in the States. I just talk to as many folks as possible."

🌐 Backed by the Live365 Engine

When it comes to the technical and operational side of running Radio Soul 100 FM, Arthur credits Live365 with providing the foundation needed to compete on a global scale.

"I would not have this nomination without the Live365 back engine," Arthur notes. "Let me count the ways: licensing to the US, UK, Canada, and Mexico, and the work that was put in to pull that off for independent stations gave us instant credibility."

For Arthur, the platform's support and built-in features made a big difference early on:

 • The Support Team: "The Live365 staff is #1. Any issue or problem I faced, they had an answer, workaround, suggestion, and/or tutorial!"
 • Automatic Monetization: "The ad breaks inserted in the broadcast, when I didn't have any advertisers, promotions, or a clue how to acquire them, made us look better than we were!"

💡 Arthur’s Advice for Independent Broadcasters

For anyone setting up their first stream on Live365 today, Arthur emphasizes clarity of vision, flexibility, and community support over trying to know everything from day one.

 • Know Your Intention: "Define your vision, find your communicative intention, and recognize that you don't know everything. Most importantly, learn to enjoy the process along the journey."
 • Learn to Pivot: "Be flexible, you don't yet know what you don't know. Segueing isn't just in your programming; don't be afraid to try something different, whether that's your approach, style, format, or distribution. Learn to pivot!"

At the end of the day, Arthur believes the survival of independent radio relies entirely on broadcasters looking out for one another.

"Business is a grand task. If we as independent small businesses don't lock arms and give each other support, then the large businesses who are locking arms right now will make us irrelevant. I feel like we're a community, and a win for Radio Soul 100 FM is a win for all of us!"

English synth-pop star La Roux (real name: Elly Jackson) is back in the spotlight. the GRAMMY-winning producer, songwriter, and performer behind "Bulletproof" and "In For the Kill" has a new album on the horizon. The record will be her fourth studio effort, and follow-up her 2020 LP Supervision.

The new project is called Old Flames and is set to drop this autumn. According to a press release acquired by Live365, the album will see her confront the "collapse of a 17-year relationship, the ache of forbidden love, the loneliness of addiction, and the struggle to reconcile sexuality and identity beneath the glare of public scrutiny." It promises to make sonic and visual references that span everything from David Lynch to Donnie Darko; All Saints and Mariah Carey, alongside Jackson's Jeep and summertime rain.

Check out our selection of free stations streaming La Roux music at Live365.com.

On her vision for the album, La Roux said: “ This record says things how they are: how I am and who I am. It’s been a process of admitting what I got wrong through telling these tales and coming to terms with where I am now. Old Flames is
essentially me processing why I’ve behaved the way that I have and saying goodbye to it. It’s a farewell to that way of behaving in love and life. And in music too.”

To give fans a preview of what's to come, Jackson has dropped the melancholy beat "Cabin Fever." It's a pop track with a 90's-influenced sound that has La Roux addressing a closed-off lover. "Well, I've got cabin fever / And I can't take it down
It's like I'm falling deeper / And I can't turn it' round," she croons during the song's chorus. The official visualizer has her sitting on a wooden deck, looking out onto a lake with a steely expression.

Speaking on the single, La Roux commented: "‘Cabin Fever’ is about where I was: stuck in my head and lost, having to be brutally honest about it in order to escape."

La Roux's notable return comes on the heels of highly-anticipated dates opening for Hilary Duff on her first tour in decades. She is scheduled to perform as support during various shows, including concerts in Cincinnati on July 28 and New York on August 5, 2026.

La Roux started off as a group project formed in 2008 by singer Elly Jackson and record producer Ben Langmaid. The act's debut self-titled album was a critical and commercial success back in 2009 - ultimately winning a Grammy Award and producing the hit singles "In for the Kill" and "Bulletproof." After Langmaid left the group in 2012, Jackson took the La Roux name for herself and released a second album, Trouble in Paradise, in 2014. Despite a meager commercial reception, the album received glowing reviews from critics. La Roux subsequently parted ways with Polydor Records and released her third album, Supervision, independently in 2020.

Old Flames is set for release on November 6. You can pre-order a copy and pre-save on digital platforms here.

Mercury Prize-winning rapper Little Simz has announced a new EP is coming very soon. The project is called Sugar Girl, and it will be her first release since last year’s studio album, Lotus.

The EP is set to arrive next Friday, May 8, via AWAL. According to Genius, fellow hip-hop artist JT also features and has a writing credit.

Little Simz has shared a teaser of the album, with a verse from an unreleased song, via Instagram yesterday (April 29). Before that, she posted two cinematic clips showing "Sugar Girl HQ." In the visuals, women work various jobs in an office environment while a phone rings and a Simz song plays in the background.

Sugar Girl is the latest in a string of stopgap EPs from Simz, the last of which was Drop 7 in 2024, just over a year after No Thank You. Since Lotus, she has helmed an edition of London’s prestigious Meltdown festival, performed sold-out UK arena shows, and toured North America.

Rapping isn't the only thing Simz has been up to. She recently acted alongside Cillian Murphy in Steve, the 2025 Netflix movie adapted from Max Porter’s Shy. Other than that, she's been involved in some legal activity. In early 2025, reports indicated Little Simz filed a lawsuit against her former producer, Inflo, regarding unpaid loans.

<![CDATA[Must-Have Radio Equipment in 2026: The Modern Broadcaster's Guide]]>https://live365.com/blog/5-must-have-pieces-of-radio-equipment/5f07451d8f4ade3c135b553eWed, 29 Apr 2026 14:04:00 GMT

The urge to hit the airwaves and share your sound with the world is a powerful thing – and these days, it’s easier than ever to make it happen. You can’t scroll through your feed without seeing another breakthrough in the audio world, but let’s be real: radio isn't just "trending." It’s been evolving for decades, and in 2026, we’re seeing the most exciting shift yet.

Does the rise of new tech mean the era of human-powered broadcasting is over? Definitely not. It just means you don’t need a massive corporate budget or a forest of broadcast towers to reach a global audience. Whether you’re a hobbyist DJ, a niche music curator, or a storyteller, the barrier to entry has officially crumbled.

But once you've started, you might find yourself wanting more – crisper talk segments, higher stream quality, or a workflow that lets you juggle tasks without breaking a sweat. That’s where the right gear comes in.

In this guide, we’re breaking down the essential radio equipment you need to sound like a pro without the "big studio" price tag. We’re here to help you navigate the gear that actually matters, so you can spend less time worrying about cables and more time building your community. If you are just starting out and looking for a deeper dive into the basics, check out our guide on how to start an internet radio station. Without further ado, here are some must-have pieces you need to take your beginner setup to a pro studio!

Must-Have Radio Equipment in 2026

In 2026, the "essential" list has shifted. While traditional FM stations still rely on heavy rack-mounted gear, internet radio broadcasters focus on agility and audio clarity. To get on the air, you need:

 1. Computer or Laptop
 2. Broadcast Microphone
 3. Audio Interface or Mixer
 4. Headphones
 5. Broadcasting and Automation Software
 6. Stable Internet Connection

1. Computer or Laptop

The computer is the most critical piece of internet radio equipment. It acts as your central hub, handling everything from music library management to the final encoding of your stream.

What it handles:

 • Automation software: Running your 24/7 schedule.
 • Live broadcasting: Hosting shows in real-time.
 • Encoding: Converting your audio into a digital stream to be sent to your provider.

Recommended Specs for 2026:
You don’t need a high-end gaming rig, but you do need reliability. Aim for a modern processor (i5/M2 or better), at least 16GB of RAM to handle multiple audio processing tasks simultaneously, and an SSD for quick access to your music files. Most importantly, ensure it has enough ports (USB-C or Thunderbolt) to connect your radio microphone setup.

2. Broadcast Microphone

A microphone is obviously essential for doing live or recorded talk pieces. If you are just starting out, some quick options to test out are built-in mics, earbuds, and headsets. However, built-in mics, earbuds, and headsets will provide the lowest audio quality. So a traditional microphone is your best bet at getting awesome sounding audio. It's the very core of your setup, especially if you are serious about continuing with talk pieces!

Dynamic Microphones (The Industry Standard):
As noted in our previous guides, dynamic microphones are the workhorses of the radio world. They are durable and excellent at rejecting background noise – perfect for home studios that aren't perfectly soundproofed. Most broadcasters choose dynamic mics because they provide that classic "radio" warmth.

Condenser Microphones:
These are much more sensitive and offer a wider frequency response. They're often used in controlled, quiet studio environments. If you have a dedicated room, a condenser can provide incredible detail, but be warned: it will pick up the sound of your neighbor’s lawnmower or your computer’s cooling fan.

Some examples of high quality microphones we recommend are:

2.1 Microphone Accessories

Once you’ve picked your mic, you need a way to hold it and keep it steady. While these might seem like extras, they are important parts of your mic setup that keep your audio from sounding amateur.

 • Boom Arms & Mic Stands: We always recommend investing in a boom arm. Unlike a standard desk stand, a boom arm raises the mic off your desk and increases its maneuverability. This keeps your workspace clear and, more importantly, stops the mic from picking up "thump" sounds every time you move your mouse or set down a coffee mug.
 • Shock Mounts: This is the cradle that your microphone sits in. It uses elastic bands to suspend the mic, acting as a buffer against vibrations. If you tend to talk with your hands or have a noisy keyboard, a shock mount is a lifesaver.
 • Pop Filters: If you’ve ever heard a loud, distorted "pop" when a broadcaster says a word starting with 'P' or 'B,' you’ve heard a plosive. A pop filter is a simple mesh screen that sits between you and the mic to catch those bursts of air, keeping your audio smooth and easy on the ears.

3. Audio Interface or Mixer

This piece of radio broadcasting equipment converts the analog signal from your microphone into a digital signal your computer can understand.

USB Audio Interfaces (Simple & Compact):
For 2026, many solo broadcasters prefer a simple USB interface. It’s compact, affordable, and ideal for single-host stations. It provides high-quality preamps for your mic without the footprint of a large console.

Mixers (Control for Multi-Host Shows):
A mixer is essentially a device that allows you to control the levels of different audio sources. Whether you are conducting an interview with multiple microphones or playing music from an external device, a mixer gives you physical control over your sound. Think of this as a necessity once you start bringing in guests or if you want that classic 'pro' experience of riding the faders during your live segments.

Here are some great modern mixers to get you started:

4. Headphones

Headphones are crucial for any broadcaster. They allow you to monitor your audio quality in real-time, ensuring that your voice is clear and your music levels are balanced.

In a home radio studio equipment setup, headphones are also a technical necessity to prevent feedback loops. If you listen to your broadcast through speakers while your mic is live, the mic will pick up that sound and create a piercing screech. Look for "closed-back" designs; they prevent sound from leaking out and being caught by your microphone, giving you the most accurate representation of what your listeners are hearing. Earbuds can certainly work, however, over-ear headphones are recommended for the best results.

Some great headphones include:

To see a full list of some top-rated headphones, click here.

5. Broadcasting & Automation Software

Hardware is only half the battle; your software acts as the "brain" of your studio. In 2026, most broadcasters use a hybrid setup with an all-in-one service provider like Live365. As a fully licensed internet radio platform, we handle the legal heavy lifting (royalties) and 24/7 cloud automation, ensuring your station stays on air even when your computer is off.

For live segments, you can choose from a variety of beginner-friendly to professional-grade tools to send your audio to your stream:

 • Mixxx: A free, open-source favorite for DJs who love to mix and beat-match live.
 • RadioDJ: The "set-it-and-forget-it" gold standard for deep, logic-based automation on Windows.
 • BUTT (Broadcast Using This Tool): A lightweight, no-frills encoder that sends your live audio to the web with zero fuss.

This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds: total tactile control when you're behind the mic, and the reliability of a cloud-based hub when you aren't.

6. Internet Connection Requirements

You can have the best internet radio gear on the market, but if your connection is spotty, your listeners will drop off. In 2026, stability is more important than raw download speed.

 • Upload Speed: We recommend at least 5 Mbps of dedicated upload bandwidth.
 • Stability: Always use a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi is prone to interference that can cause "dropouts" during a live segment.

7. Optional Equipment for Polishing Your Station

Once you have the basics down, you might look into internet radio gear that adds a professional polish to your broadcast.

 • Microphone Processors: You might be wondering: how do I get that "big radio sound"? A processor helps you achieve this by adding compression, de-essing, and equalization in real-time. While much of this can be done via software now, hardware processors still offer a specific "warmth" that many pros swear by.
 • Acoustic Treatment: Soundproofing helps manage reverb and echo. You don’t need to lead-line your walls; simple acoustic foam panels can significantly improve the clarity of your voice by stopping sound waves from bouncing off hard surfaces.
 • Stream Decks: These control pads allow you to trigger jingles, sound effects, and station IDs with a single physical button, making your live shows feel much more dynamic.

8. Equipment You Don’t Need for Internet Radio

One of the biggest misconceptions for new broadcasters is the fear of high startup costs. For a modern internet station, you can officially skip the following:

 • Broadcast towers and RF transmitters
 • Satellite distribution systems
 • Massive, room-sized broadcast consoles
 • Expensive FCC licenses for frequency space

At the end of the day, a radio station is so much more than a collection of gadgets and software – it’s about the voice, the music, and the connection you build with your listeners. You don’t need an expensive, large studio to make an impact; in the modern landscape, a simple, reliable setup is more than enough to broadcast your signal to every corner of the globe.

As you dive into the world of independent internet radio stations for inspiration, remember that the most successful broadcasters aren't always the ones with the flashiest gear – they’re the ones with the most heart and the most consistent programming. Focus on the essentials, get comfortable behind the mic, and let your station grow alongside your audience. We can't wait to hear what you create.

Happy broadcasting!

<![CDATA[Internet Radio: Focusing on an International or Local Audience?]]>https://live365.com/blog/internet-radio-focusing-on-international-or-local-audience/5f07451d8f4ade3c135b564cFri, 24 Apr 2026 20:58:00 GMT

As an internet radio broadcaster, your reach is essentially endless. Unlike traditional terrestrial broadcast radio, you aren't limited by tower range or transmitter power. You can take a national, or even international, focus with your station from day one.

So, with the option to broaden your target demographic globally or keep it tight and regional, you might ask yourself: "Should I focus my attention on a national/international audience, or keep it local?"

The right answer depends entirely on your station’s long-term identity. Whether you're a hobbyist building a tight-knit community or a professional broadcaster looking to scale for global ad revenue, we want to break down the benefits and downsides of each focus so you can make the best choice for your broadcast.

The National & International Focus

An internet radio station gives you the immediate possibility of reaching national and international listeners. This is the single biggest benefit of webcasting: you have a massive pool of individuals to tap into. A wider pool means exponentially more opportunities to build a major fanbase.

However, there's a catch. Just because you can reach the entire world doesn't mean the listeners will automatically find you. Dedicated marketing is the key to unlocking that pool and creating loyal listeners.

The Downsides of a Global Target:

 • Diluted Marketing: While you may be playing genres of music or talk that clearly appeal to people globally, you may find it challenging to create impactful marketing materials for such a massive target audience.
 • The Generic Trap: Marketing to the entire world forces your messaging to stay broad. In marketing, lack of specificity is often the enemy of engagement.
 • High Competition: There are thousands of classic rock or true-crime talk stations out there. If your message is generic, it's incredibly easy for your station to get lost in the noise.

The Local Focus

For an internet radio station, choosing a local focus might seem counterintuitive at first. The downsides might seem obvious: your immediate geographical pool is significantly smaller, and you are competing against established local AM/FM stations that already have commercial dominance in cars.

On the flip side, a local focus gives you a powerful secret weapon: extreme specificity. Human beings naturally feel an allegiance and pride toward their home cities or regions. Tapping into that local identity can be an incredibly effective growth hack.

The Pros of a Local Target:

 • For Music Stations: You can champion your city's local music scene, interview homegrown indie artists, and promote upcoming regional concerts.
 • For Talk Stations: You can cover niche community news, local high school or college sports, and regional politics that bigger stations overlook.
 • Sponsorship Opportunities: For professional stations, local businesses love supporting local media. It’s often much easier to sell ad space to a neighborhood business owner who wants to reach a specific regional crowd.

A Tale of Two Ads: The Power of Specificity

To see how this works in practice, let’s look at a digital marketing example.

Imagine you're creating a Facebook or Instagram ad for your rock station, and you choose a purely national or international audience. You might set your ad parameters to target several countries, a standard age range, and broad interests like "rock music," "The Rolling Stones," or "classic rock." While there's nothing wrong with that audience, it's extremely generic. Millions of other things are competing for that user's attention.

Now, imagine you create that exact same ad, but you add a localized layer ≠ for example, targeting the Pittsburgh area. Your ad copy reads: "Pittsburgh's home for classic rock and the local independent music scene."

Suddenly, you have added an element of community relevance. That regional connection might be the exact reason someone clicks on your station link instead of scrolling right past it. The exact same rule applies whether you're running paid social ads, swapping banners, or using local hashtags.

The Hybrid Approach: The Best of Both Worlds

The truth is, you don’t necessarily have to choose one or the other. You can blend both strategies to optimize your growth:

 1. Use Local for a Strong Foundation: Use local elements in your programming and marketing to capture an highly engaged, loyal core audience.
 2. Keep the Digital Door Open: Because you are on Live365, your stream is natively available in multiple countries. You can run localized programming while still accepting listeners internationally who stumble upon your stream or love your specific curation style.

What if you have zero interest in local programming?

That's completely fine! If you want a purely international station, you can still achieve the necessary marketing specificity by going hyper-niche with your format. Instead of being a broad "Rock Station," become the ultimate destination for "1970s Japanese Psychedelic Rock." Instead of a general "Sports Talk" show, focus exclusively on "Fantasy Football for Keeper Leagues."

The Bottom Line

Regardless of whether you choose a national, international, or local focus, the ultimate key to marketing your station is getting specific. If you're just getting started, struggling to move your listener metrics, or looking to revitalize your brand, take a step back and define your "specific thing." You might just find that narrowing your focus is the fastest way to build a passionate, loyal audience.

<![CDATA[Modest Mouse Announce Next Album 'An Eraser and a Maze']]>https://live365.com/blog/modest-mouse-announce-next-album-an-eraser-and-a-maze/69e7cb52dad3061cb0dab944Tue, 21 Apr 2026 22:35:40 GMT

Modest Mouse is dropping their first independent release in 30 years.

After more than two decades on Epic Records, the indie rock group have revealed An Eraser and a Maze: the band’s first self-produced album since 1997’s The Lonesome Crowded West. The LP will also be the follow-up to their 2021 project The Golden Casket.

The new LP arrives June 5 via frontman Isaac Brock’s Glacial Pace Recordings. The first single, “Look How Far,” premiered in March, while the latest single from the album, “Picking Dragons’ Pockets,” was shared today (April 21).

Initially conceived as an EP to his Ugly Casanova side project, Brock instead decided to expand An Eraser and a Maze into Modest Mouse’s eighth studio album.

“For this one, I turned off my filter and just let it all happen,” he said in a statement acquired by Pitchfork. “Even though every goddamn musician says that when they put out a record. I mean, go ahead and listen to the three-minute mark of any interview between a musician and Terry Gross …”

The new album arrives one week before the band hits the road once more for an expansive North American trek. In February, they embarked on their first-ever cruise fest: Modest Mouse Presents Ice Cream Floats.
